Amazon to Start Selling Cars on its Platform in the US

Want to buy a car on Amazon? Well, soon you might be able to.

Amazon will launch vehicle sales in the US next year and allow local car dealers to sell directly to customers on its site.

In an announcement with car maker Hyundai, the two companies said Amazon will begin by offering Hyundai vehicles.

Hyundai will name Amazon's cloud computing unit AWS as its preferred cloud provider, and add Alexa, Amazon's popular voice assistant, to its newer vehicles.

The idea, according to Amazon, is to have customers buy a new car online and pick it up — or have it delivered — from their local dealer.

In the US, nearly all states require car makers to sell their vehicles through dealerships to make sure they don't sell the cars for a lower price.

Amazon did not say how many dealers would be participating or if customers across the US would be able to buy cars online.

An Amazon spokesperson said the company would release more details as it builds the program, which it plans to begin with Hyundai dealers and launch during the later part of next year.

At the moment, Amazon sells vehicle equipment online and offers a showroom for people who want to research different types of cars they may want to buy. But people can not directly buy a vehicle on its platform.

Amazon might have difficulty convincing customers who might not feel comfortable buying something that big on its website — although a spokesperson for the company said that more and more people these days are buying cars online.
