Lonely Planet Reveals Its Top Travel Destinations for 2024
Celebrating its 50th anniversary, travel guide Lonely Planet has released its list of the best places to visit in 2024.

From bustling European hotspots to the mountains and glaciers of Pakistan, Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2024 list includes 50 destinations that will make for unforgettable adventures.

The selections were made by over 200 Lonely Planet staff as part of a survey, with the destinations covering five categories — countries, regions, cities, sustainable destinations and destinations that offer the best value.

The top five countries selected were Mongolia, India, St. Lucia, Mexico and Morocco, with the Mongolian countryside offering a peaceful escape, and a trip to the Old Delhi markets in India being highlighted as an essential experience.

Montana in the US, Ireland's Donegal, Tuscany in Italy and Kangaroo Island in Australia were the top regional selections made by Lonely Planet staff, as well as the Trans Dinarica Cycling Route.

This 3,300-kilometer route, which connects eight countries in the western Balkans and passes mountains, lakes, rivers, villages, national parks and UNESCO sites, is recommended for anyone who loves a long cycling challenge.

Among cities, Nairobi in Kenya takes the top spot as a busy center for culture, food, arts and safari. Paris remains ever popular as the second-best city on the list, followed by Canada's Montreal, Mostar in Bosnia, and Philadelphia in the US.

Ecuador, with the "world's first renewable-powered airport," was selected as the number one sustainable destination. Others included Spain (second), Patagonia (third) and Hokkaido (eighth), offering plenty of outdoor and eco-friendly activities.

For top travel value, visit Poland, the American Midwest, Nicaragua, Normandy in France, or Bulgaria's Danube Limes — a number of buildings left from the days of the Roman Empire. Alternatively, fall asleep and wake up in a new country on one of Europe's night trains, placing 10th on the list for value.
